San Juan Basin History
Located in Northwest New Mexico and Southwest Colorado, the San Juan Basin covers more than 22-thousand square miles.
The northern portion of the San Juan Basin has historically been the site of conventional natural gas and coal bed methane development. In 2013, the horizontal Gallup oil play was discovered in the southern end of the basin. This created opportunities for crude oil, natural gas, and water midstream investment into the play.
Since 2013, nearly 400 horizontal wells have been drilled in the Gallup play, which boasts a forecasted EUR of more than 600 Mboe per well.
The Gallup reservoir is measured at a depth of 5500’, thickness of 150’, and porosity of 6-8%. The source rock for the Gallup sandstone reservoir is the Mancos shale which has shown potential for even greater development in the San Juan Basin.
